Restoring Strength, Function & Beauty

When a tooth needs more than a filling.

Once a tooth is too broken down, cracked or heavily filled for a filling to hold it together, a crown is usually the answer. Often called a cap, it is made to measure and fits right over the tooth, bringing back its shape and strength so you can bite and smile without a second thought. Modern metal-free crowns are remarkably lifelike and translucent, catching the light just as a natural tooth does.

At Netherton Dental Practice we offer crowns in a range of materials, chosen to suit each individual tooth.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a fixed cap that encases the whole of a tooth above the gum. We often recommend one when a tooth has extensive decay or a sizeable fracture, after root canal treatment, where it needs to anchor a bridge or sit on an implant, where acid erosion has worn it down, or simply to protect a tooth that has become weak.

A well-made crown looks and feels just like the tooth it replaces, and with the right material it will keep doing its job for many years.

Your Private Crown Options

Private Crowns

Privately you can choose gold, zirconia or full-porcelain crowns, with the finest aesthetic finishes available.

We will set out the choices plainly so you can settle on what best fits your tooth and your budget.

Types of Crowns Available

We provide several types of crown, recommended according to the tooth involved, the look you want and your budget.

Metal Crowns

Cast from hard-wearing base metals, these are immensely strong and durable, a sensible pick for back teeth where a heavy bite matters far more than how the crown looks.

  • Extremely tough and long-lasting
  • Well suited to the molars
  • Needs only a little of the tooth removed

Gold Crowns (Private)

Gold is wonderfully durable and kind to the teeth it bites against, a favourite where lasting strength on a back tooth is the priority.

  • A premium, long-lived choice
  • Excellent on heavily loaded back teeth
  • Distinct gold colour

Zirconia Crowns (Private)

Zirconia is tooth-coloured, metal-free and exceptionally strong, equally at home on a front tooth or a hard-working molar.

  • Natural in appearance
  • Strong, with no metal at all
  • Copes well with a heavy bite

Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain comes into its own where looks come first, especially on front teeth and cosmetic work, for its lifelike, translucent finish.

  • Blends with your natural shade
  • Ideal for teeth on show
  • Available as all-porcelain or porcelain bonded to metal

The Dental Crown Procedure

1

Assessment — we examine the tooth and agree which crown will suit it best.

2

Preparation — the tooth is gently shaped to make room for the crown.

3

Impressions — a digital or conventional mould is taken so the fit is spot on.

4

Temporary crown — a temporary cap protects the tooth while the lab makes the final one, with the two visits usually about two weeks apart.

5

Fitting — at the second visit your finished crown is adjusted, checked and permanently bonded in place.

How Long Do Crowns Last?

Cared for well, a crown will commonly last 10 to 15 years and often a good deal longer, depending on its material and how you look after your teeth.

  • Brush and clean between your teeth daily
  • Avoid biting hard objects like ice or pens
  • Keep up your regular check-ups
