Dental Extractions: What to Expect and When It's Needed

At Netherton Dental Practice we will always do our utmost to keep your own teeth in place. Now and then, though, a tooth is simply too decayed, broken or troublesome to rescue, and removing it is the kindest course. If we have suggested taking a tooth out, there is no need to worry. A routine extraction is straightforward and comfortable, and we will be beside you the whole way through.

What Is a Dental Extraction?

An extraction simply means lifting a tooth cleanly out of its socket in the jaw. The usual reasons include:

  • Decay or infection that has gone too far to treat
  • Gum disease that has loosened the tooth
  • A tooth broken beyond repair
  • Crowding, often to make room before braces
  • A troublesome wisdom tooth
  • A stubborn baby tooth that has not come out on its own

We will only suggest taking a tooth out once every other avenue, a filling, a crown or root treatment, has been ruled out.

Types of Extractions

Simple Extraction

  • For teeth that can be seen and reached easily
  • Typical for loose, decayed or damaged teeth
  • Done comfortably under local anaesthetic

Surgical Extraction

  • Needed for teeth still trapped in the gum, such as wisdom teeth
  • May need a small opening in the gum
  • Stitches are occasionally placed
  • Carried out under local anaesthetic, with sedation if you prefer

Is the Procedure Painful?

It really isn’t. A local anaesthetic numbs the tooth and gum completely, so all you should notice is a little pressure rather than any pain. If you tend to feel anxious, we have plenty of ways to help you relax and can talk through sedation where it is suitable. Our team is gentle, experienced and focused on keeping you at ease.

The Procedure

1

Assessment and X-rays — so we can plan the best way to remove the tooth.

2

Numbing — the area is fully settled with local anaesthetic.

3

Removal — the tooth is gently eased free and lifted out.

4

Aftercare — you leave with clear instructions to help it heal well.

Most routine extractions are over in under half an hour, and the healing begins within hours.

Aftercare: Healing & Recovery

After your extraction:

  • Steer clear of hot drinks, smoking and alcohol for the first day
  • Keep to soft foods for a day or two
  • Take any pain relief exactly as advised
  • A cold compress will help ease any swelling
  • Leave the healing clot undisturbed, so no spitting or drinking through straws

The socket usually heals over within a week to ten days, and we are only a phone call away if you need anything while you recover.

Treatment Options

Private

A private extraction may suit you if you would like to be seen quickly, or where a healthy tooth is being removed for cosmetic or orthodontic reasons. Our routine extractions start from £192, and we will confirm the cost for your particular case beforehand.

We will set everything out plainly so you can make the right choice with confidence.
