If you are dealing with severe pain, swelling, an injury or a broken tooth while the surgery is open, telephone us on 01508 532226 as early in the day as you can and we will always endeavour to fit you in for same-day treatment.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not sure whether what you are experiencing counts as an emergency? These are some of the most common reasons patients telephone us urgently during the day:

  • Severe toothache or throbbing pain
  • Swelling in the face, jaw, or gums
  • A knocked-out or loosened tooth
  • A broken, chipped, or cracked tooth
  • A lost filling or crown
  • Bleeding that won’t stop
  • Dental abscess (pus, swelling, fever)
  • Injury to the mouth or jaw

If any of these sound familiar, please telephone us as soon as you can. The earlier in the day we see you, the better the likely outcome.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

While you wait for your same-day appointment, a few simple steps can help in the meantime:

Knocked-Out Tooth

  • Lift it by the crown only, never touching the root
  • Rinse it gently, without scrubbing
  • Slip it back into the socket if you can, or keep it in some saliva
  • Telephone us at once, ideally to be seen within two hours

Severe Toothache

  • Rinse with warm salty water
  • Use over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol
  • Steer clear of very hot or very cold food and drink
  • Telephone us to arrange an urgent appointment

Broken Tooth

  • Keep hold of any fragments
  • Rinse your mouth carefully
  • Hold a cold compress to the cheek to ease swelling
  • Telephone us as soon as you can

Lost Filling or Crown

  • Hold on to the crown if you still have it
  • Try not to chew on that side
  • Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can serve as a short-term fix
  • Telephone us to arrange a repair

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Toothache & Pain

Ongoing or severe dental pain often points to infection, decay or damage beneath the surface. We will pinpoint the cause and bring you relief quickly.

Broken or Chipped Teeth

Be it a knock, biting down on something hard or weakened enamel, we can repair and rebuild a damaged tooth without delay.

Dental Abscess

An abscess is a serious infection that needs treating promptly. Tell-tale signs include swelling, a throbbing ache, a raised temperature and an unpleasant taste in the mouth.

Lost Fillings & Crowns

When a filling or crown comes away it can leave sensitive tooth exposed. We will re-cement or replace it to protect the tooth and ease any discomfort.

What to Expect

When you telephone us with an emergency, here is what happens next:

1

Telephone us and describe your symptoms so we can judge how urgent things are.

2

Same-day appointment — we will fit you in as quickly as we can.

3

Assessment — your dentist examines you, takes X-rays where needed and finds the cause.

4

Treatment — we relieve your pain and tackle the problem straight away.

5

Follow-up — any further work is booked in for another visit if required.

Costs

As a private practice, we keep emergency appointments available throughout the working day.

A daytime emergency appointment during opening hours is £75 plus the cost of any treatment you need. Our pricing is straightforward, with nothing hidden.

We will always talk you through the cost before any treatment starts, so you can make a confident decision about your care.
